&#39Cascading effect&#39 of adverse childhood experiences can spur teen violence

Washington, Nov 14 (ANI): Adverse experiences early in life can lead to serious violent behaviour in adolescence, says a new study.

The researchers found that &#39cascading effect&#39 of repeated negative incidents can give rise to minor childhood behaviour problems, which can grow into serious acts of teen violence.

During the study, the researchers looked at 754 children from preschool through adulthood.

They found that children who have social and academic problems in elementary school are more likely to have parents who withdraw from them over time, which in turn compels them to make friends with adolescents exhibiting deviant behaviours and, ultimately, engaging in serious and sometimes costly acts of violence.

Kenneth A. Dodge, the lead author of the study and director of the Centre for Child and Family Policy at Duke University said that developmental path toward violent outcomes was largely the same for boys and girls.

They also found that the cascade could be traced back to children born with biological risks or born into economically disadvantaged environments, which makes consistent parenting a challenge.

They determined biological risk by assessing the temperaments of the children in infancy, based on mothers&#39 reports; those at risk were irritable, easily startled and difficult to calm.

These children are more likely to exhibit minor social and cognitive problems upon entering school. From there, the behaviour problems begin to cascade, he said.

The report appears in journal Child Development. (ANI)

Wildfire approaching Michael Douglas, Oprah Winfrey&#39s houses near Santa Barbara

Washington, November 12 (ANI): Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe, and Oprah Winfrey&#39s houses in the hills of the wealthy Southern California coastal town of Montecito face the danger of being gutted by a wind-driven bush fire, which has already destroyed several homes.

Representatives for Lowe and Winfrey confirmed that the celebrities&#39 homes had not been destroyed, and that neither was staying in the area Thursday night.

Dozens of large multimillion-dollar houses appeared engulfed by flames in TV footage.

About a quarter of the community of 10,000 people was evacuated, and more could be moved if the fire spreads.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 6 p.m., quickly spread through more than 800 acres in the foothills five miles south of Santa Barbara.

It looked like lava coming down a volcano, Fox News quoted one Leslie Hollis Lopez as saying as she gathered belongings from her house.

Santa Barbara County officials said that about 125 engines and three water-dropping helicopters were en route or at the scene.

Southern California Edison spokesman Paul Klein revealed that the fire temporarily knocked out power to more than 20,000 homes in Santa Barbara, and that only scattered pockets of homes were without power by late Thursday.

The fire even burnt a dormitory building and several other classroom facilities at Westmont College. (ANI)

The &#394 Minute&#39 hitmaker has filmed a brief video message about the Raising Malawi Academy for girls and posted it on her website for the noble cause.

After witnessing the potential of Malawi&#39s girls firsthand, I made it my mission to give them an opportunity to become their personal best, Contactmusic quoted Madonna, as stating in her message.

Madonna shot a video in her hotel room to record her appeal to all to help the Malawi girls excel in life by funding for their school.

There are very few girls in Africa in general who are encouraged or allowed to go to secondary schools so, after spending a lot of time there, I realized that one of the ways I could help was to build a girls school, Madonna said.

I would really be grateful if you would get involved and help me in any way you can with donations, spreading the word, visiting my website, reading about the progress we&#39ve made so far. Please visit our website. I would appreciate any help you could give us, she added.

Olivia Newton-John&#39s secret of eternal youth is happiness with her hubby

London, Nov 14 (ANI): Hollywood actress Olivia Newton-John, who just celebrated her 60th birthday, has revealed her secret to staying so young-looking -her recent marriage.

Newton, who has gone through a lot, including cancer, divorce, the disappearance of her partner and her daughter&#39s anorexia, married health guru John Easterling, 56, in June this year in a mountaintop ceremony in Peru.

I guess I&#39m lucky, genetically, I&#39m like my mum and she looked great right up until her death in 1989, The Mirror quoted Newton, as saying.

But I think the real secret is that I am very, very happy. I have a wonderful new husband and we&#39re very compatible. I&#39m having the best time and I&#39m in a great place emotionally, she added.

Newton and her current husband met 15 years ago through mutual friends.

Olivia&#39s dog had just had puppies and she gave one to John. Then, two years ago, he turned up at one of her shows and brought the dog, who&#39s now 13 and called Sherlock.

I loved the dog and then I grew to love John, Newton said.

John and I are so well matched and have so much in common. He makes me smile all the time and that&#39s so important, Newton added.

Sherlock also plays a part in helping Olivia stay young and fit, as taking him for walks around their Florida neighbourhood is part of her daily fitness regime.

I try to do something each day that involves getting out in nature, says Olivia.

Walking Sherlock is perfect. I play tennis and go to the gym three or four times a week, too. I feel great and certainly don&#39t worry about being 60. It&#39s just a number.

I feel alive, fit and active. I have no plans for retirement. My only concession to getting a little older is that I like to have a cat-nap in the afternoon. After that, I can push on through anything, she added. (ANI)

I was 18 when we first met, 19 when we first started dating. There was no rush. I really don&#39t believe that you will love the same thing when you&#39re 20 as you do at 30, Contactmusic quoted her, as telling U.S. magazine Seventeen.

Knowles added: Before the age of 25, I would never get married. I feel like you have to get to know yourself, know what you want, spend some time by yourself, and be proud of who you are before you can share that with someone else. (ANI)
